Online Education ~ Is It the Best Option?
by Edward Strebeck

One of the best options in education has come about in the
last ten years -- online education is the perfect
opportunity for people who don~t have access to a college
or university campus. In recent years, online education
has become extremely popular; some large, prestigious
institutions are even offering online courses and degrees
programs.

If you decide on this high-tech option, you~ll be able to
take the classes you want and have your books and other
supplies brought right to your home. The Internet can be
the answer to your educational dilemma, but before you sign
on the dotted line, take the time to do some research.

Working people don~t generally have the time or the funds
to return to school full-time. When they work everyday it~s
difficult to attend school a few evenings a week, as well
as study on week-ends. Online education may be just what
you need.

If your interest is in upgrading your existing skills, it
probably doesn~t make sense to quit your job to go back to
school. Especially if you have a family that is dependant
on you and your income -- you can~t merely abandon your
responsibilities. Besides, most individuals can~t survive
on student loans, let alone a whole family.

Another possible stumbling block in going back to school
may be that you don~t live near a college or university.
The reality for most people is that it just isn~t feasible
for them to relocate, as it would entail quitting their
jobs and uprooting their families. With educational
opportunities online, they suddenly have a realistic option
for getting a degree.

Before you register, there are a few things to think about,
although you may be convinced by now that the Internet is
the way for you to go. Just like any classroom program,
online study is intense. You have to make sure you have
enough time and be able to discipline yourself to use it
wisely.

When you start an online class most will give you an
idea of how much time you can expect to spend each
week on the course work. You should ensure you can
put aside at least that much time per week, but some
people may need more time so don~t underestimate.
You should also seriously ask yourself if you are
disciplined enough to do the required course work, and
this could mean several hours a day.

You may want to consider starting out with just one class
to see how you handle it. There will be plenty of time to
enter your degree program after you start. In addition,
there are usually mentors on hand to help you with studying
and any questions may have.
