There are many different types of depression that each has
their own diagnosis as well as treatment. In all cases a
medical doctor will have to make a professional diagnosis
before prescribing medication or other treatment.

One of the most severe types of depression is "major"
depression. This type of depression is usually quite easy
to diagnosis as more of the symptoms are present in this
type of depression than any other type. Major depression
is often the result of a traumatic experience or event that
occurs in a person~s life. Major depression can also be
the result of a series of personal disappointments that a
person experiences over a period of time that start to
cause problems in their daily life. Many people experience
some type of major depression once in their life and then
never experience it again.

Dysthymic disorder is another type of depression. People
with dysthymic disorder experience a less severe form of
depression than major depression with less severe symptoms
and overall depression. Individuals suffering from dysthymic
depression feel depressed every day for an extended period
of time. The depression may be responsible for low energy,
changes in appetite and sleep patterns, diminishing self
esteem and a general feeling of sadness. This particular
type of depression responds well to medication and
counseling. Dsythymic depression frequently reoccurs, so
individuals who experience it will need to be vigilant about
their symptoms.

There are other types of depression that are often
difficult to define and to put into any category. Only a
medical doctor will be able to determine how severe the
depression is and whether or not it should be treated with
medication. One type of depression that is difficult to
determine is called "reactive depression", otherwise known
as an adjustment disorder. In this type of depression the
person is having difficulty adjusting to changes in their
life and may be experiencing severe side effects of some
type of stress in their life. In this type of depression a
medical doctor may be reluctant to prescribe any type of
medication and instead may recommend counseling and
therapy.

The single most important thing to remember if you or a
loved one is experiencing depression is to seek the advice
of a trained professional experienced with treating
depression. Some times person only exhibits some of the
minor symptoms of depression. As a result, they tend to
minimize their symptoms, assuming this is just a minor
disturbance. Even those suffering from minor depression can
find relief with medications or therapies. There is no
reason to let these depressions reach crisis state. Anyone
who suffers from depression should seek help, no matter how
minor the depression, there is always help available, no one
needs suffer alone.
