The Benefits of Counseling

Life is stressful. Life has heartaches. Life presents
difficulties that we are unprepared for. If you are
struggling with any of these issues and don't feel like you
can find answers within yourself or your circle of friends
and family you may want to consider counseling. Counseling
is an excellent way to find help to resolve issues regarding
relationships, emotional well-being, and other issues that
affect the heart and mind. A qualified counselor can guide
you through the process of self-discovery and help you to
strengthen those parts of your life that feel weak.

One-on-one counseling is an excellent choice for some
individuals. They may not feel comfortable discussing their
concerns in the company of others. In this case, you should
find a counselor who offers private counseling-most do-and
set up an appointment.

However, if you are comfortable sharing your issues and
concerns in a group setting there are counselors who offer
group counseling sessions. The group usually consists of
people who are dealing with the same types of issues, who
may or may not be at the same stage that you are. In this
setting you will get lots of different opinions and feedback
from several individuals on how best to approach your
situation. Group counseling can be done with small or large
groups.

Often, if a person has medical insurance, it will cover the
cost of seeing a counselor. This would be included as a
"mental" or "behavioral" health benefit. There are people
who are not aware that this is included in their benefits or
coverage, so if you can't find the information in the
paperwork that you've been given, give your insurance
company a call before you pay for any counseling out of your
own pocket.

Once you have determined that counseling is covered by your
insurance you have more decisions to make and questions to
ask. Some insurance companies will let you choose any
provider to go to, but most have a list of preferred
providers for you to pick from. Find a counselor on the
list in your area and give them a call to see if they are
taking new patients. If you cannot find a provider that you
would like to see on the list of preferred providers, then
you may have the option of using an "out of network"
provider. With this option, you will probably have to pay
more out of pocket, but you will have more say in who your
provider is. With in-network providers you just pay a
co-pay for each visit. You should also discuss with your
insurance company how many visits you are allowed within a
certain time period because many have limits.

Recognizing that you may need help in relationships, with
an addiction, or just to build your self-image is the first
step on the road to recovery. Counseling is an excellent
way to take you on down the path. With a qualified
counselor you can begin to heal yourself and get on with
the business of living your new life.
